The Divided City - Pt 2

Title: The Divided City
Author: [info]autumnsdarling
Fandom: Star Wars
Setting: Prequel-Era
Rating: G
Characters: Original Characters (Shai Laren Ashak, Anselm Erith)
Length: 5 parts
Words: 3,500
Summary: Fresh from Coruscant, a Jedi Master takes his new padawan to a city at war with itself - where everyone has lived underground for decades in fear of one another - on a diplomatic assignment to find some common ground between the warring factions, and make the city whole again.
A/N: Although I'm posting this one later, this story actually falls chronologically before Murder on the Outer Rim Express, and is the first thing I ever wrote for Shai. It's worth noting that Anselm (in all his glory) belongs to [info]dark_knight_130, who is kind enough to let me borrow him from time to time.

The two Jedi walked down the No Man's Highway that ran through the very centre of the Divided City. Their cloaks whipped and whirled in the dry, dead wind that tore through the calcified heart of the city – an endless, concrete mausoleum that stretched up against the featureless clouds above them.

Tu Mei clung silently to a support rail, lost high up in the eaves of the Senatorial Building in the capital city on Uru V. Expanses of clinically perfect marble stretched out on all sides of her, and the tall windows let in the blazing sunlight of an idyllic summer’s day. She’d watched the Doctor and his companions enter the Presidential Office over an hour ago – absolutely still and silent while every nerve in her body sang with hatred and anticipation – and she hadn’t moved a muscle since. It didn’t matter. All that mattered was that she kept waiting. All that mattered was the Doctor.

The Outer Rim Express screeched and snarled and buckled as it steamed towards the canyon – its thrusters thrown suddenly into full reverse. The very fabric of its superstructure shuddered and groaned with stress. The carriages jack-knifed and concertinaed, and a mile of metal and glass screamed in bitter protest and slid across the sand like oil on water for a full two minutes, before finally coming to a rest just outside the gaping maw of the ravine. The last few carriages banked hard, threatening to roll the entire train – exposing the white hot underbelly of the repulsorlifts and crushing everyone inside – but after several seconds they righted themselves, and soon they too had come to a shivering halt.

Shai Laren and Major Alladice faced down on top of the driver's cabin of the Outer Rim Express and stared at one another. The huge, cone-shaped smokestack roared and distorted with the heat, and the top rim of it glowed white-hot with the force of the massive sublight drives that churned in the engine-house below.

Master Anselm Erith vaulted onto the roof of the hard-banking express train, and allowed himself a moment to find his feet. He looked down the glistening metal string of carriage roofs – a long, easy curve of silver, turning lilac in the gentle light of evening.

Shai Laren landed on the roof of the Outer Rim Express as it barrelled through the cooling air of the encroaching desert night. The stars were just beginning to come into view against the darkling sky – great whorls of crystal shards that glimmered faintly through the moon's thin atmosphere – above the emerald brilliance of the planet that sat swollen and distorted on the horizon. The wind roaring and cracking around her had a razor's edge as she steadied herself on the carriage-top – still faintly warm from the re-entry – and it stung her skin and tore at her cloak as she straightened to her feet. The red sands of the moon were rushing up beneath the blast-furnace of the thrusters of the Outer Rim Express, and the whole world pitched about the twisted silver thread of the express train.

As the door of the Senator's room shattered inwards in an explosion of tiny shards of wood and the light from the corridor beyond flooded in, Shai Laren and her Master looked in to see a dark shape bending over the Senator's body.

I blame ngaio...

Indirectly, because she introduced me to [info]01100100 who is now responsible for my wasting the last thirty minutes of my life doing this:

So... Coruscant... Flying cars... My special shoes...

All that's missing is Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Mind you, that's nothing new.

“Attention all passengers,” said a crisp, computerised voice over the speaker system of the Outer Rim Express. “We will shortly be entering the atmosphere of Syllian Two. Please return to your seats, and remain there until we have descended safely. Thank you.”

Two days earlier, Shai Laren and Anselm had stood together on the platform of Station Five in the swamps of Orus Major, and waited for the Outer Rim Express to pull up to the platform.

Murder on the Outer Rim Express - Pt 1

So, I figured that it was probably about time that – given I can't be trusted to use this journal as a human being – I start using it as a writer and put some of my legion fanfic up here for everyone to point and have a good laugh at.

If nothing else, it gives me something to do, keeps me off the streets, and all

[info]ngaio   's friends were doing it and I felt sad and lonely not jumping on that bandwagon.

Over the next few weeks, months... years... expect the addition of a lot of random nonsense here. Predominantly Star Wars and Doctor Who-based stuff, although I may be bullied into sharing some of the more... unusual material I have on my harddrive. You never know.

And so, without further ado, I give you the first instalment of 'Murder on the Outer Rim Express', an eight-part story set in the prequel-era Star Wars Universe (vaguely between Episodes I and II if you must know), about a Jedi, his Twi'lek padawan, and an intergalactic train.

What's not to love?

“It's all right,” Shai Laren told Jedi Master Anselm Erith as he swung himself down into the driver's cabin of the Outer Rim Express and a haze of bitter smoke. “I'm almost certain that I know how to fly this thing...”

Rho Kinto

I don't remember my homeworld. Not really. I wasn't as young as a lot of the initiates are when I was taken away, but despite that, only the faintest of impressions is left now. I remember it the same way that an infant must remember being in the womb - a disconcerting sort of weightless feeling; the experience of perfect calm, utter bliss. The day that I was taken is only a little clearer - like being born, I suppose - a wrenching sensation, like being torn out of another living, breathing thing.

I remember the young Jedi Knight that waded ashore with me in his arms - not his face, but the distorted impression of his presence. I remember how tightly he held on to me. I remember his concern. His fear. I know now that I must have been the cause of those emotions. I think I screamed the entire way to Coruscant. I must have terrified him. But do you know what? I think that he must have held on to me that entire time. I don't know who he was, but I know I owe him everything. If he had let me go, I am almost certain that I wouldn't be here now.

Shai

I am standing on the meditation balcony of the Temple Spire, at sundown on the evening before the day that I am to be Knighted. The sun is setting, but it is not a beautiful, shifting painting of red and gold and pink. Instead, it is a slow, gradual slide from wind-blown grey towards the murky gloom of night. The dusk is blustery as autumn, and small smatterings of icy rain are blown against my stinging skin. The wind roars through the great ravines of Coruscant.

I am alone up on that balcony, standing far, far above the city that stretches out forever in the gloom towards the distant, vacant horizon.

I have never felt quite so alive.

Clean Up

Since [info]ngaio was kind enough to mention me to her legion friends on here, I figured it was about time that I did some cleaning up around here.

I'm a very different person now to the one that I was for a lot of the time that I was writing here, and a lot of the stuff here just didn't belong any more.

Anyway, so some entries have been removed, some have been friend-locked, others have been opened up, and broken image-links have been fixed.

House cleaning all 'round then.

Just got back from a two day training course in Warwick. Very boring, very tiring, and I was very ill for most of it, but I got a lot of writing done while shut up in my hotel room covered in Vix.

You can find some of it over at my ongoing project with a close friend: [info]phosphorusdream , should you be interested.

Probably some of it will find its way here sooner or later.

Expect much geekiness
